About Us

Your Hosts: Don Ferguson & Darrelyn Hubley Ferguson

We first met on the North River in Cape Breton many years ago; so it was appropriate for our first date to be a “fishing” one. Both of us are avid outdoor enthusiasts who really enjoy the great outdoors! After managing the Atlantic Outdoor Sports & RV Show for many years, Darrelyn decided she was ready for a change, so the “Wooden Bear Lodge B&B” was born.

We invite you to come to our home and share with us the wonderful experience of life in Porters Lake. Our lakeside home is nestled into the hillside. Take a stroll through the many gardens and down the path to our “Boathouse” that sits on the water’s edge. The view from both the house and dock is spectacular!

If you are lucky you may get a chance to watch a bald eagle soar overhead. There are several resident bald eagles that patrol the lake daily. Ospreys, loons, ducks, geese, wood peckers and herons are also very common to see. There is an abundance of wildlife!

Our home is open all year round. Each season brings with it, its own treasures:

  • Spring leads way to the ice melting; new leaves on the trees; crocuses blooming in the garden and peepers in the pond.

  • In the summer: go for a swim; take the canoe or kayak out for a paddle; dangle your feet in the water; fish from the dock; or simply relax in the hammock or one of the Adirondack chairs down at the lake and read a book. Hiking; surfing; golf close by.

  • The fall is gorgeous in hues of orange; yellow and red. Great time to hike the Crowbar Hiking Trail (only a couple of minutes down the road).

  • The winter gives way to cozy fires by our fireplaces and ice skating at the lake (good ice permitting).

  • There are great all terrain vehicle trails that are close and accessible year round.

  • Then, of course, there is “Christmas at the Wooden Bear”. We definitely love to deck the halls in all their glory and we believe there is nothing like a good, old fashioned Nova Scotia Christmas!

During the summer join us around a campfire down at the boathouse on the weekends (weather permitting) - it is one of our favourite things to do.

Did I mention that we also love to cook…?

Part of our welcoming committee includes Kodiak & Dakota, our resident Golden Retrievers. They too love the lake!
